• Analyse social issues and social developments and in this: 

• Make plausible what the relation is between the social issue and the rule of law, the parliamentary democracy, the welfare state and the pluralist society; 
• Argue if important values (in the rule of law, the parliamentary democracy, the welfare state and the pluralist society) are at stake in this social issue; 
• Describe the relationship between social issues and social inequality in a society.

      Assignment description 

For this assignment you are going to work in groups of four and with this group you will have to create and maintain a weblog on social problems. The issues that you discuss on this weblog (your own WordPress page) will  

1. fit the topicality, and  

2. fit with the subject that we are discussing in the  

class (so when we are working on Parliamentary Democracy the subject on the weblog will be elections, politics in general, formation etc etc etc and when the chapter is Rule Of Law it can be police, law cases or anything that fits the rule of law). 

Each week Thursday at 15.00 hours a new weblog entry has to be posted. You work by rotation, which means that each member of the group has to write a piece for the blog every four weeks. 

Each entry has to fit the following conditions: 

1. The subject of the entry has to be on the current news, 

2. There is a brief description/summary of the subject/issue in which you also describe all the participants in the issue, 

3. There is an analysis of the problem, 

4. There is a well funded opinion on the issue. 

Try to write the articles with a pun, so it is nice to read, slightly in the sense of a column. Give your opinion on the subject and therefor nuance, defend, tackle arguments.  

In Appendix A (Analysis questions) you find an analysis diagram that can help you analyse social problems. You will need this diagram or at least the handles that are given in this diagram to work on this assignment. 

Postscript: Subjects such as smoking, drugs, alcohol, eating disorders and so on, will only be accepted when political-judicial, social-economic, social-cultural or change-compare angles on the subject are being described. In short, don’t just write about all kinds of drugs and their effects on the body and mind!!! That’s biology.  

Prinsjesdag Assignment (mandatory) 

The third Tuesday of September is known as Prinsjesdag. It is the day the cabinet presents the plans for the upcoming year and further. For your first entry on the Wordpress page each member individually is going to write an article on Prinsjesdag. In this article you have to 

1. Make clear what is Prinsjesdag. 

2. Explain what is the role of the king in Prinsjesdag. 

3. Explain what is the Miljoenennota, and what is the purpose of the Miljoenennota. 

4. Give a short impression of the plans of the cabinet for the upcoming parliamentary year. 

5. give your reaction on two of the plans of the cabinet as presented in the Miljoenennota, using arguments. 

This will be the first entry for each member of the group on the Wordpress. This means that 15.00 Thursday, 23– 9 I find three or four entries on the page.

Tien november 1989, vol verbijstering zag ik op TV beelden van Oost-Duitsers die zonder belemmering de grensovergang in de Berlijnse Muur passeren en huilend in de armen van de eveneens huilende West-Duitsers vallen. In de nacht van 9 op 10 november was De Muur gevallen en een einde gekomen aan 28 jaar van fysieke scheiding in een gespleten stad.1Thuis, veilig op de bank in Tilburg huilde ik ook, ontroerd door het geluk dat van de beeldbuis afspatte. Maar ook doordat ik op dat moment geloof, echt diep geloof, dat de wereld voor mijn ogen verandert. Wat ik zag was groots, en als dertienjarige jongen toog ik die dag naar school, ergens met de verwachting dat het hét gesprek van de dag zou zijn. En ook met de lichte hoop wat uitleg te krijgen. Een maand eerder hadden we immers nog op het nieuws kunnen zien hoe de DDR met grote militaire parades het veertigjarige bestaan vierde en nu leek diezelfde machtige natie ten einde. En was dit dan het einde van de Koude Oorlog? Kon ik mijn vrees om in een kernoorlog te verzanden loslaten? Bij geschiedenis kregen we de opdracht het boek te openen bij de vroege Middeleeuwen, het hofstelsel was het onderwerp van de dag. Met verbijstering hoorde ik de docente vertellen hoe horigen in herendienst voor de heer werkten.

Elf september 2001, op de terugweg van IVLOS, de postdoctorale lerarenopleiding in Utrecht, besluit ik in Tilburg nog even bij Aad’s Platenzaak binnen te lopen. Terwijl ik door de bakken tweedehands cd’s struin, hoor ik achter de balie de eigenaar verbaasd mompelen “Dit kan niet waar zijn… Het is net een film.”. Om zich vervolgens tot mij te richten; “Heb jij het al gehoord?”. Ik weet van niks, heb net anderhalf uur in de trein en bus gezeten in een nog mobielloos tijdperk, en hij draait het scherm van zijn immense computer een kwartslag de zaak in. Voor mijn ogen zie ik de beelden van een brandende toren, op het moment dat het tweede vliegtuig zich in de Twin Towers boort.

Twee voorbeelden van gebeurtenissen in mijn leven die een grote invloed hebben gehad op de wijze waarop ik kijk naar het onderwijs in het algemeen en dan vooral de maatschappelijke taak van de docent. Dat het ook anders kon dan de stilte van mijn docente geschiedenis in 1989, zag ik in 1990 toen de Eerste Golfoorlog uitbrak en mijn leraar aardrijkskunde daar het lesprogramma voor opzij zette. In mijn eigen werkzame bestaan als docent is inmiddels genoeg gebeurd om zelf voor de vraag te staan waar het belang ligt, bij de examenstof of bij een klassengesprek of zelfs een beetje duiding van de rap veranderende wereld voor de jeugd die deze veranderingen ook nog eens met elk nieuw pushbericht op hun mobiel binnen krijgen. Gebeurtenissen die bij mij al jaren de vraag voeden wat nu precies de taak van de docent is in de samenleving en die mij uiteindelijk tot het formuleren van de volgende onderzoeksvraag hebben gebracht:

The 17th century – Travel guide to the Low Countries of the 17th century

Assignment:

Write and design a travel guide describing The Netherlands for time travel tourists that want to travel to The Low Countries in the year 1666. In order to give the time travel tourists an accurate idea of their destination, you describe the people, the political, economic, cultural and religious situation and you offer a tour to see some of the cultural highlights of The Low Countries in this century. 

You also write a rationale, describing the choices you make in topics you discuss and the sources you use and why you make these choices shortly.

All of the above mentioned study targets should be included in your brochure.
